WOW Air Leaves Passengers Stranded

Their website is still up and says: “WOW Air is a happy, low-fare, long-haul airline. Book your cheap flight directly from WOW Air's website to get the best prices.”

Well, the stranded passengers might not be happy, as they have to purchase new tickets to either get home or get to their vacation destination.  The airline suggests its passengers contact their credit card operations office and get a refund.

Rival Icelandair is trying to scoop up some of those stranded travelers by offering a seat on any of their flights, where available, for a discounted price.  For information on destinations and booking instructions, please visit:
http://Icelandair.com/getmehome

WOW Air was an Icelandic low-cost carrier that operated services between Iceland, Europe, Asia, and North America. The airline was headquartered in Reykjavík.  In a statement, the airline said it has ceased operations, and as a result "all WOW Air flights have been canceled."

The airline encouraged customers who had paid for their ticket with a credit card to check whether the credit card company would refund the price of their ticket, and directed passengers to other airlines to try to find alternative routes to their destinations.

Stranded passengers were not provided with accommodation and no refunds were issued - even though it would be the law in the European Union. Iceland is heavily integrated into the European Union via the European Economic Area and the Schengen Agreement, but it is not a member state.

Maybe not such a big loss for aviation as WOW Air was recently elected as “worst airline” in Europe.

How to Disable a Malfunctioning Flight-control System
As the Lion Aircrew fought to control their diving Boeing Co. 737 Max 8, they got help from an unexpected source: an off-duty pilot who happened to be riding in the cockpit.
That extra pilot, who was seated in the cockpit jump seat, correctly diagnosed the problem and told the crew how to disable a malfunctioning flight-control system and save the plane, according to two people familiar with Indonesia’s investigation.
The next day, under command of a different crew facing what investigators said was an identical malfunction, the jetliner crashed into the Java Sea killing all 189 aboard.

None of the 81 passengers and eight crew members was injured. Aviation Fees & Taxes Increase
US airlines have hit out at proposed Trump Administration aviation tax increases they estimate will cost passengers an extra  $US2.9 billion a year.  Aviation lobby group Airlines for America (A4A) has said the “unnecessary” tax increases in the 2020 budget would be in addition to the $US25 billion customers already pay each year into government coffers through 17 federal aviation taxes, and fees. The increases include a rise in the Transport Security Administration passenger security fee from $US5.60 to $US6.60 in fiscal 2020 and from $US6.60 to $US8.25 starting in the financial year 2021.

Thoughts About The Boeing 737 MAX

Guy Leitch explained in his Daily Maverick article:
The 737 MAX uses bigger engines which changed the handling characteristics of the 737 MAX compared to the previous generation.

To save Boeing from having to re-certify the aircraft because of the handling differences, and to save airlines buying the MAX from having to spend money on expensive pilot training, the FAA agreed to Boeing’s request to install a system called MCAS (a stabilator-trim system) to automatically lower the nose at low speeds to prevent the plane from stalling.

Airlines always like to claim that safety is not negotiable.

When the Lion Air MAX crashed into the sea off Jakarta the ‘black box’ data recorder showed that the airspeed indicator was wrong and this had caused the MCAS to constantly try to lower the nose of the aircraft, despite the pilots’ best efforts to raise it.  And judging from the radar and satellite returns, this is also what happened to the Ethiopian MAX 8.

Profits vs Safety
What these two tragedies have done is shine a spotlight on the age-old conflict between profits and passenger safety. And some airlines have failed the scrutiny.

What is, however, hard to swallow is that South African Comair and all the American Airlines initially refused to ground the MAX. For American Airlines, such as South West with 31 MAX 8s already flying, a grounding is a financial catastrophe.  But Comair has only one MAX 8 flying, (with another to be delivered shortly).  And yet even with the exposure of a single MAX, Comair chose to put profits ahead of passenger safety.

Spiegel Online wrote:
"Several pilots of American and Southwest have filed complaints earlier about the jet in the "Aviation Safety Reporting System", a US authority database on flight safety. According to one entry, the flight manual is "inadequate and almost criminally inadequate".

Boeing had developed the MCAS technology because otherwise, the flight characteristics of the aircraft would have changed due to a new type of engine placement. Pilots were unlikely to notice the change - probably also because the change to the new model was to require as little effort as possible. In some cases, the pilots were only trained on the iPad with an hour's training program."

Aviation News March 2019

B737 MAX 8 Banned in Most Countries
Boeing’s latest versions of the 737 have been dealt a new blow with the European Union  Aviation Safety Agency banning all flights within, to or from Europe and saying further action may be necessary to ensure the continued airworthiness of the B737 MAX 8 and MAX 9. Aviation authorities in China and Indonesia moved quickly to suspend 737 MAX operations and the jurisdictions temporarily banning the plane widened Tuesday to include Australia and Singapore.
Gulf airlines also grounding the MAX aircraft, as well as finally the US and Canada.
Read the whole story here:
https://www.airlineratings.com/news/new-blow-to-boeing-as-europe-bans-737-max/

Flight attendants from the USA had demanded a ban on identical aircraft until the cause of the crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8 in Ethiopia has been clarified. The APFA (Association of Professional Flight Attendants), which represents the more than 27,000 flight attendants of American Airlines, called on the head of the largest US airline to take such a step. The Transport Workers Union (TWU), which includes Southwest Airlines flight attendants, had been also demanded a grounding.

Ryanair Sticks to Strict Baggage Rules
Ryanair will stick to its new strict hand luggage rule in Germany. That's what marketing boss Kenny Jacobs said at the ITB travel fair in Berlin.
Since November, the Irish low-cost airline has only allowed passengers to take a small bag that fits under the front seat free of charge. If you want to take a trolley with you in the cabin, you have to book priority boarding or check in your luggage - both costs extra. Wizz Air recently introduced a similar rule.

Lori Cline Taking a Chief Position at AA

INTERVIEW: FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL
Lori Cline became the youngest airline captain in the world on the day of her 23rd birthday. Now she is a chief pilot at American Airlines' second-largest hub: Charlotte Douglas International in North Carolina.

How did you get started?
I started flying before I was driving, taking lessons in my grandfather's Cessna 172 at the age of 13.  I attended Indiana State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in aviation administration and professional flight.

What was your first job?
Helicopter pipeline patrol, which, as I look back, is probably a flying job you only sign up for when you're young and dumb.  Flying at 300-400ft smelling for sulfur (which signaled a leak), or checking for farmers who may be digging too close to the gas line seems highly perilous and fraught with unnecessary risk now that I'm older and wiser.

What came next?
I was hired by Atlantis Airlines, a commuter in the southeast, in 1981.  While there, I was passed over for captain nine times – not because I was a woman, but because I wasn't old enough to get my air transport pilot (ATP) certificate.  You had to be 23.  Finally, a captain's slot opened about six weeks before my 23rd birthday and both the director of operations and director of training took turns coming out of their offices to fly the trips in that line to hold it for me.

I went to the Federal Aviation Administration office at opening time on the morning of my 23rd birthday, they endorsed my ATP and on that very day, I hopped into the left seat to fly as the youngest airline captain in the world.

I was hired by a major airline, the original Piedmont Airlines, in 1984 as a flight engineer on the Boeing 727, the Cadillac of the Boeing fleet.  To this day, it is still my favorite aircraft. I upgraded to captain nearly three years to the day after I was hired.  Piedmont merged with USAir in 1989.

There, I spent five years in the flight safety department as both the manager and director before joining the Airbus training department and then spent another 18 years as an A320 check airman, aircrew programme designee and standards coordinator.

Neither Piedmont nor US Airways ever had a female chief pilot so the chief's position for me at American at our Charlotte Douglas International airport (CLT) hub is new from many perspectives.

The Very First Pilot License

The First Licensed Woman Pilot – Raymonde de Laroche.
109 years ago she defied all odds and became the first licensed pilot ever.

When she became an actress, she started meeting various aviators and became very fascinated by aviation.  The demonstration flights in Paris by the Wright brothers in 1908 also had a lot of influence.

She approached Charles Voisin, a pilot, and an airplane builder, and asked him to teach her how to fly. Raymonde de Laroche began her journey of becoming an aircraft pilot.

Her First Flights
She started her flight training in October of 1909, in Chalons, some 140 kilometers east of Paris.

Because the Voisin‘s aircraft could seat only one person, Raymonde learned the controls while she was on the ground.  She showed excellent progress and after she successfully taxied the aircraft around the airfield, she took off for her first flight.  Thus she became the first woman to pilot an aircraft October 22nd, 1909.

The following day she returned to the airfield and completed another flight. This time it was a much longer flight, measuring 6 kilometers.

The French Aero-Club officially issued her on March 8th, 1910, an F.A.I. approved pilots license "No. 36 to Raymonde de Laroche". She became the first woman with an official pilots license.  Read more about her life as a pilot - and how it ended...

International Women in Aviation - March 8th

Women in Aviation International

International Women’s Day is being celebrated on Friday 8 March 2019
British Aviation Minister, Liz Sugg, said: “For every 100 airline pilots, 94 are male. With a shortage of pilots in the future, the aviation industry needs to be making the best use of the talent in this country.”
Women account for nearly half (47%) of the national workforce, but only 6% of airline pilots in the UK are women - while India’s female pilot numbers are double of that.

Nancy-Bird Walton
Australia’s newest major airport will be named after pioneering pilot Nancy-Bird Walton to honor her significant contribution to the nation’s aviation industry.  The title of her autobiography, “My God! It’s a Woman”, stemmed from reaction over the telephone of Queensland grazier Charles Russell after he discovered the Walton was to be the pilot of a plane tasked to rescue him during a 1936 flood.  She lived long enough to see the first Qantas Airbus A380 Superjumbo named after her.

Douglas DC-3 Video and Her Story

Photo: Krazations

The DC-3 taught the world to fly - but she had an extraordinary, almost uncaring birth: The man who wanted her couldn’t afford her, the man who built her was reluctant to build her and the men who first flew her on December 17th, 1935, didn’t bother to arrange a photographer to capture one of aviation’s greatest moments.

.
Legendary American Airlines’ President Cyrus Smith who wanted the DC-3 as a sleeper transport was in “a cold sweat because he just didn’t have the money to pay for them,” according to Donald Douglas Sr., famed founder of Douglas Aircraft Company in a 1965 interview.

.
But Mr. Smith was persuasive and ordered 20 of the larger DC-3s that would have 50 percent more capacity than its smaller sibling, so Mr. Douglas gave in.  As Mr. Smith did not have the money, he flew to Washington to successfully beg a colleague who ran President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a $4.5 million loan.

Aviation News February 2019

2018 Airline Safety

Last year some 4.3 billion passengers flew safely on 46.1 million flights worldwide.  According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) there hasn’t been a major U.S. airline accident in years.
Last year some 4.3 billion passengers flew safely on 46.1 million flights - which translates into the equivalent of one accident every 740,000 flights.
The African continent was the only region worldwide to see a decline in the all-accident rate compared to 2017.
Part of IATA’s mandate is the search for additional risks in commercial aviation with one well-known hazard being inflight turbulence.
IATA stated: “Flying is safe, and the data tell us that it is getting safer.

Million Air Debuts New FBO at New York’s Westchester County Airport (HPN)
The famous FBO chain introduced its new stunning FBO with a gala opening night party. It took 20 months of construction to finish the 29,000-sq-ft, two-story Adirondack-inspired building.

It includes a new 52,000-sq-ft hangar, which was completed last May, and 100,000 sq ft of additional ramp space. The main building holds a complimentary Starbucks coffee bar, three conference rooms, six fireplaces, pilot lounge with en suite showers and two snooze rooms, flight-planning area, a room-sized golf simulator, and 22 tenant offices, including a 4,000 sq ft suite occupied by flight training provider Performance Flight.

Meigs Field Chicago
One of the most exciting airports - located on an island next to downtown Chicago - was not only popular with pilots and passengers, but also with Microsoft simulator pilots.  I flew in and out on a sunny morning and it was an exciting moment, also because there was a rumor that the airfield should be closed - a personal fight between the then mayor and the Illinois senator.  The whole airport appearance was much of a bygone era and somewhat enchanting.

It’s been nearly 16 years since the city’s former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s illegal destruction of the airport.  While the property, which was built in the 1930s, was initially intended to be a park, the airport had been in operations there since 1947. It was a convenient place to land for visitors to the nearby convention center and downtown Chicago.Undecided pilots who are eligible to vote in the Chicago area might want to take a close look at Willie Wilson, who has vowed to reopen Meigs Field, should he be elected.
