My Piece of the Sky

Anna Flynn is one of nearly 1,100 Women Airforce Service Pilots who ferried military aircraft during World War II.  She belongs to 136 female pilots who went on to fly the most powerful high-performance military pursuit aircraft at the time—the P-40 Curtiss Warhawk, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-51 Mustang.

In May of 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh left New York in a small single-engine plane and flew nonstop to Paris, becoming an overnight hero to the world and a personal hero to eight-year-old Anna Flynn.  From that time on, Anna knew she would become a pilot - but it would take sixteen years and a number of roadblocks before her dream would begin to unfold.

At age 22, Anna moved to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, where she worked as a riveter at Piper Aircraft and earned her pilot’s license.  Later she also has been a flying instructor.  However, any description would certainly include her curiosity and, perhaps, stubbornness.  These traits helped set her sights on the "man's world" of aviation in its early stages.

"My father did not want me to learn how to fly.  He didn't want me to leave home.  So we kind of argued about it for a little while.  And then finally he said, "Well, if you want to try it, go ahead.  Always know you've got a home to come to. So he was pretty good about the whole thing.  And I never realized until I had kids of my own, what he must have been going through."

Anna Louise Flynn: A Dangerous Job
"One day, I went to take off and I noticed there was this strong odor of gasoline, but I thought they had just refueled, so what could you expect?  But it got worse.  And I was taxiing out.  When I turned around to take off, it got so bad I had to open the canopy.  Then I noticed my feet were wet. Gas was pouring right into the cockpit."

“After the war, I just did not want to get out of the airplane.  The very last flight, that was kind of handed me on a platter.  We were at the going-away dinner that they gave us, and we got word that they needed one more WASP to move a P-47.  Everybody wanted that one, so we drew straws. And I won."

Memoir by Anna Flynn Monkiewicz
Anna tells the story of her journey into the sky - from the wishful thinking of a child in 1927 to a woman who in 2010 stood with fellow Women Airforce Service Pilots in Washington, D.C., to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. At the age of 94, she published an e-book memoir:  “My Piece of the Sky.”  Anna Louise Flynn passed away on August 10, 2019, at age 100.

Two additional aircraft
The EU is investing in its firefighting fleet Canadair CL-415
The European Union is building up a fleet of water bombers to fight forest fires. It has now been expanded further. Since the users are very satisfied, the Canadian owner Viking Air is starting the production of an improved version, the Viking Air CL-515 firefighter plane.

Comparison: The Boeing 777x vs Airbus A350
What Plane Is Best?
In our opinion, the lightweight, agile and adaptable A350, with its significantly lower purchase cost, will be a tough offering for Boeing to beat. However, for a mission where the maximum capacity is desired, Airbus just can’t offer anything as big as the 777-9.

Airbus shows off third Beluga XL
The manufacturer has already built three of the giant transport aircraft. Three more will follow. Now the third Airbus Beluga XL has been painted.
The six Beluga XL will be completed by 2023. The 63.1-meter long giant transport aircraft with a payload of 50.5 tons will replace the five current Belugas (officially: A300-600 ST).

.
United Airlines To Restrict Travel For Those Who Don’t Wear Masks
Ultimately, if a passenger isn’t exempt, a flight attendant will notify the customer that face coverings are mandatory for the benefit of everyone onboard. If they don’t have a mask, the airline will provide one for free.
Altogether, during this sensitive climate, it is great to see US airlines taking a hardline approach to passenger safety. Despite most passengers complying, there may be some anomalies. Therefore, United is looking to deal with these incidents firmly.

AVIATION NEWS and JOBS June 4

London City Airport To Be Operational By The End Of June
The small central London airport has been closed since March 25th due to a massive drop in demand.
It would be up to individual airlines to announce if and when they are resuming services.  One obvious candidate for returning to London City would be LoganAir.  The airline operates a flight between London and The Isle of Man for BA CityFlyer.  The only other airline operating domestic flights is BA CityFlyer itself. It makes sense for the airline to resume some London City flights.  Potentially, Aer Lingus could also be included with Dublin being in the Common Travel Area.
Like many other airports, the reopening of London City will come with some new rules attached. The airport is asking passengers to observe social distancing.  All passengers will have their temperature taken on arrival and departure from the airport.

40 Destinations: Austrian Airlines flies again
Good news from AUA: the Lufthansa subsidiary will take off again from 15 June after almost 90 days of grounding.  Forty European destinations will be served for the time being. Numerous regulations and restrictions will be imposed on passengers.
Destinations will be Amsterdam, Athens, Basel, Berlin, Brussels, Bucharest, Dubrovnik, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Larnaca, London, Munich, Paris, Prishtina, Sarajevo, Skopje, Sofia, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Thessaloniki, Tirana, Varna and Zurich.  Belgrade, Graz, Innsbruck, Kiev, Kosice, Milan, Nice, Prague, Split and Warsaw will follow.
New: mouth-and-nose protection is mandatory and boarding will in the future take place by groups.

Electric Aircraft Breaks World Record
It is not the first passenger plane that flew fully electric, but it is the largest. A Cessna 208 Caravan flew purely electrically for 30 minutes.
The world premiere took place on December 10, 2019. At that time a converted De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver took off from Harbor Air for its maiden flight in electric mode. It was the first fully electric flight of a passenger aircraft. The Canadian airline wants to convert its entire fleet to electric propulsion. It is relying on technology from Magnix.
Magnix is also on board the latest record. The American company has developed the Magni 500 electric motor, which is 560 kilowatts strong. It powered a Cessna 208 caravan on Thursday (May 28). With a capacity of nine passengers, the passenger aircraft is larger than the DHC-2.

Lufthansa Board Approves Giving Up Slots For A Bailout
On 25th May, the airline agreed to a $9.88bn economic recovery package under the Economic Stabilization Fund. However,  the package was anything but free help.  The board agreed for the airline to release 24 take-off and landing slots at both airports to competitors.

Air Canada Uses its VIP A319 for Scheduled Flights
Air Canada Jetz actually flies for musicians or athletes. Due to the pandemic, the three VIP A319s are now available to all passengers.
Bruce Springsteen, U2, the Spice Girls or even ice hockey teams such as the Edmonton Oilers: anyone who boards an Air Canada Jetz plane must have fame or the necessary change.  Now even ordinary mortals can take a seat on board the VIP plane. Air Canada announced last week (May 21) that they will be using Air Canada Jetz aircraft on regularly scheduled flights. From June 1, they will be used on some domestic flights, such as from Toronto to Montreal or Ottawa.

Lufthansa flies from Munich to the USA again
Lufthansa has resumed flights from Munich to the USA. On Wednesday (June 3), it flew non-stop to Los Angeles for the first time since March 13, 2020.  Lufthansa had already flown an A350 from Munich to Chicago the day before. From now on, both destinations in the USA will initially be served three times a week from the Bavarian capital.

Why Is Wizz Air So Cheap?
Wizz Air is a European low-cost carrier based out of Budapest, Hungary with operations rapidly expanding across the region and even as far away as Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
A ‘relentless focus on costs’
- A single-type fleet - the Airbus A320 family
- Fleet leases - it has a young collection of fuel-efficient and reliable aircraft
- Wizz Air’s cheapest tickets are usually for flights that depart or land at less-than-ideal times: very early in the morning or late at night
- The airline has one of the densest configurations on the market. Its Airbus A321s have 230 seats in a single class configuration - Wizz’s seat pitch is a meager 28 inches
- Tight turnaround times at airports, making the boarding and deplaning process as quick as possible.
- The passenger experience is basic - no checked baggage, no carry-on’s
Conclusion: They leave out the ‘extras’ and leave customers to pay additional fees for them. Employees won’t be paid well either..
