B737 MAX 8 Banned in Most Countries
Boeing’s latest versions of the 737 have been dealt a new blow with the European Union  Aviation Safety Agency banning all flights within, to or from Europe and saying further action may be necessary to ensure the continued airworthiness of the B737 MAX 8 and MAX 9. Aviation authorities in China and Indonesia moved quickly to suspend 737 MAX operations and the jurisdictions temporarily banning the plane widened Tuesday to include Australia and Singapore.
Gulf airlines also grounding the MAX aircraft, as well as finally the US and Canada.

Flight attendants from the USA had demanded a ban on identical aircraft until the cause of the crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8 in Ethiopia has been clarified. The APFA (Association of Professional Flight Attendants), which represents the more than 27,000 flight attendants of American Airlines, called on the head of the largest US airline to take such a step. The Transport Workers Union (TWU), which includes Southwest Airlines flight attendants, had been also demanded a grounding.

Aviation Scholarships
Boeing endows $3 million to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for scholarships to assist students interested in pursuing a pilot’s license and certificates in aviation maintenance. Boeing will collaborate with Embry-Riddle to make scholarships available as early as this fall.
The Boeing scholarships will seek to increase the number of underrepresented populations in the pilot workforce, particularly women and persons of color, as well as veterans, according to university officials. AOPA Fly-Ins 2019
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Members and Friends:
In celebration of its 80th anniversary, AOPA will host three grand, two-day fly-ins for the 2019 season. These aviation festivities will run all day Friday and Saturday and will feature expanded exhibit hours, seminars, workshops, aircraft displays, and special aerial demonstrations.
Special events are being planned to include a Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) Invitational Competition to showcase the skills and aircraft of backcountry flying and an engaging Friday night aviator’s party.  The most important AOPA Fly-Ins 2019 are in Frederick, MD, in Livermore, CA, and in Tullahoma, TN.

Ryanair Sticks to Strict Baggage Rules
Ryanair will stick to its new strict hand luggage rule in Germany. That's what marketing boss Kenny Jacobs said at the ITB travel fair in Berlin.
Since November, the Irish low-cost airline has only allowed passengers to take a small bag that fits under the front seat free of charge. If you want to take a trolley with you in the cabin, you have to book priority boarding or check in your luggage - both costs extra. Wizz Air recently introduced a similar rule.

A321LR Delivery Delays
DUBLIN - Airbus cannot keep up with the production of the A321neo. Due to delayed deliveries of the first A321LR, Aer Lingus cancels flights in summer 2019 and completely cancels a new line. There is currently no adequate replacement available for the compact transatlantic Airbus.
Aer Lingus postpones the  A321LR-Linie from Dublin to Montreal to summer 2020 which was planned for August of this year.

2018 Airline Safety

Last year some 4.3 billion passengers flew safely on 46.1 million flights worldwide.  According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) there hasn’t been a major U.S. airline accident in years. 
Last year some 4.3 billion passengers flew safely on 46.1 million flights - which translates into the equivalent of one accident every 740,000 flights. 
The African continent was the only region worldwide to see a decline in the all-accident rate compared to 2017.
Part of IATA’s mandate is the search for additional risks in commercial aviation with one well-known hazard being inflight turbulence.

Million Air Debuts New FBO at New York’s Westchester County Airport (HPN)
The famous FBO chain introduced its new stunning FBO with a gala opening night party. It took 20 months of construction to finish the 29,000-sq-ft, two-story Adirondack-inspired building.

It includes a new 52,000-sq-ft hangar, which was completed last May, and 100,000 sq ft of additional ramp space. The main building holds a complimentary Starbucks coffee bar, three conference rooms, six fireplaces, pilot lounge with en suite showers and two snooze rooms, flight-planning area, a room-sized golf simulator, and 22 tenant offices, including a 4,000 sq ft suite occupied by flight training provider Performance Flight.

Meigs Field Chicago
One of the most exciting airports - located on an island next to downtown Chicago - was not only popular with pilots and passengers, but also with Microsoft simulator pilots.  I flew in and out on a sunny morning and it was an exciting moment, also because there was a rumor that the airfield should be closed - a personal fight between the then mayor and the Illinois senator.  The whole airport appearance was much of a bygone era and somewhat enchanting.

It’s been nearly 16 years since the city’s former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s illegal destruction of the airport.  While the property, which was built in the 1930s, was initially intended to be a park, the airport had been in operations there since 1947. It was a convenient place to land for visitors to the nearby convention center and downtown Chicago.Undecided pilots who are eligible to vote in the Chicago area might want to take a close look at Willie Wilson, who has vowed to reopen Meigs Field, should he be elected.

Airbus, Thai Firm to Collaborate on Pilot Training
Airbus and Thailand's Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in developing and implementing aircraft maintenance training and pilot training courses.
The aircraft manufacturer says it has started work with CATC on basic aircraft maintenance training courses, as well as ab initio flight training courses for pilots.

Volunteer Pilots Help Tell the Story of Rising Sea Levels
General aviation pilots who volunteer for LightHawk, a flight-based conservation organization, recently caught a glimpse into the future of rising sea levels and impacts on both coasts from climate change.
The pilots joined forces with the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of clean water and healthy beaches, on Jan. 22, 2019, to capture photos of king tides.

RyanAir Bought Remains of LaudaMotion
Ryanair has acquired the remaining quarter of its Austrian unit Laudamotion for an undisclosed sum.  Europe's largest budget carrier previously owned a 75% stake in Laudamotion.  Former Formula One racing champion Niki Lauda, who last year bought back and re-branded the airline he founded, gave Ryanair the option to buy the whole carrier.

They Try to Trick Everyone on Everything…
DFS successful in a case against Ryanair regarding fees
DFS was successful in its bid to demand fees based on aircraft weight from Ryanair. The fees stem from 24 occasions of missed payment between 2012 and 2013. The legal dispute involved additional claims by DFS for approach and departure fees amounting to almost EUR 500,000.

In China, female pilots strain to hold up half the sky: Chinese carriers will need 128,000 new pilots over the next two decades. Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines had all made some effort to recruit more female pilots.
