Vintage Aircraft Beech 18 - Twin Beech

The famous Beechcraft airplane was built as a civilian transport plane and throughout its lifetime acquired some nicknames such as the "Exploder", the "Bug Smasher" and the "Wichita Wobbler". Many also refer to this aircraft as the "Twin Beech".

The Beechcraft Model 18  is a 6- to 11-seat, twin-engined, low-wing, tailwheel light aircraft, manufactured once by the Beech Aircraft Corporation of Wichita, Kansas.

The timing of the introduction of this aircraft proved to be perfect: Prior to World War Two, Beech had been outsold by Lockheed almost two to one.  In fact, the last flight of Amelia Earhart was aboard a Lockheed 10 which did have some similarities to the Beech 18. Beechcraft was able to sell forty of these planes in 1940 but things were about to change in a big way.  Lockheed reverted to build larger planes and that left an opening for Beechcraft.  As it turned out, Beechcraft sold the U.S. military about 5,000 of the E-18's through the end of the war.  Many of the Beech 18's were used for training for both, pilots and navigators.

A total of more than 9.000 Beech 18 had been built over the years.  Its civilian uses have included aerial spraying, sterile insect release, fish seeding, dry ice cloud seeding, aerial firefighting, air-mail delivery, ambulance service, numerous movie productions, skydiving, freight, weapon- and drug-smuggling, engine testbed, skywriting, banner towing, and stunt aircraft.  Many are now privately owned, around the world, with 240 in the U.S. still on the FAA Aircraft Registry in 2017.
.

Record Bookings - But Also Insolvencies

After Air Berlin and the Small Planet Airline, the third German airline based in Berlin must cease operations within 15 months. Once again an airline from the holiday/low-cost segment.

A paradox: The major airlines worldwide are reporting record load factors and often solid profits.  Nevertheless, in addition to the German airlines mentioned, other players have also disappeared from the market.  Ryanair has just reported a loss and companies such as WOW Air or the Norwegian Airlines are significantly reducing the size of their route network and fire employees in the hope of reducing their massive losses.

How can this strong polarisation be explained?  The aviation industry has traditionally been a very low-margin industry.  Evaluations by the aviation association IATA for the period from 2004 to 2014 show that the average profit margin of airlines has been only 2.8 percent.  In addition to high market entry costs, the industry is also extremely dependent on external influences such as fuel prices or geopolitical events.

For larger airlines, such as Lufthansa or American Airlines, the sale of miles via the subsidiary Miles & More is a very important source of income - not the ticket sales.

Smaller airlines such as Germania cannot fall back on such sources of profit outside their core business, which puts them at a further competitive disadvantage.

On the one hand, this increasing discrepancy between small and large airlines leads to mergers, but on the other hand, it also forces many airlines into insolvency.

WOW Air #1 Worst Airlines?

WOWAir might have you saying "Wow!" Just not in the way you want. Coming in at “No. 1” on the list of the worst airlines in the world…  Well, I would have chosen Ryan Air.  But no one asked me.
See how other airlines fared:

https://www.farandwide.com/s/worst-airlines-world-0cace09f0db54400

.
Lay-Offs
The Icelandic, ultra-low-cost airline, famous for selling $55 tickets from the US to Europe also laid off 111 employees in December.  The airline added that some contractors and short-term employees will not have their contracts renewed.  However, they are still having 1,000 employees.
.
The "Detroit News" Warns:
6 things to know before flying WOW air

1. Carry-ons
While many airlines let you slide in with a roller bag and one personal bag, it won't fly on WOW air.  WOW Air only allows one carry-on the size of a purse or briefcase.  Passengers are also recommended to pack very light. A piece of checked baggage weighing over the 44-pound limit is an extra $20 per pound, according to the airline's website.

2. The seats
The seats are arranged by a standard front, standard back, XL, XXL and Big Seat. WOW Air's selections only differ by leg room, not seat size.  The difference in dimensions is also less than a foot between them.  Standard seats are up to 31 inches of leg room, XL is up to 33 inches, XXL is 35 inches and a "Big Seat" is 37 inches.  Prices are not yet available for Big Seat fees, but others are a minimum $30 up-charge.

3. Service on board
For flights lasting longer than six hours, airlines usually provide a meal, especially when crossing overseas.  Not WOW.  According to WOW's online menu, the cheapest sandwich is $10 and differs depending on where the flight is departing from.  Passengers are allowed to bring aboard their own food and closed-bottle beverages from the airport and should because WOW will not provide snacks or water.  Read the whole article:

The most dangerous Landing in the World

VIDEO Courchevel Airport
LFLJ has one of the shortest runways in the world, with a length of 525 meters (1,722 ft) and a gradient of 18.5% in order to help slow landing aircraft.  This alpine airport has a dangerous approach through deep valleys - which can only be performed by specially certified pilots.  On landing, there is no go-around procedure due to the surrounding mountainous terrain.  Courchevel, elevation 6,588′, is in the French Alps.
https://youtu.be/6pK9uqF4y7c
.

Strict Rules for Commercial Flights
The DGAC (French Civil Aviation Authority) sets very strict rules about landing in Courchevel. Private owners can use the runway for small and medium jet aircraft if they are flying themselves in their own aircraft, but for those commercially chartering, there are more stringent safety regulations – which limits access to the runway.
.

Minimum Stopping Distance
For commercial private jet charter, the minimum stopping distance for the aircraft is multiplied by 1.6, to create the minimum landing distance required (LDR).  Which makes Courchevel’s runway too short for most commercial private flights.  Many visitors are choosing a helicopter to fly into Courchevel.

Landing at Courchevel Airport with a Mooney M20J

.
Crash Into a Snow Wall
The pilot of a small aircraft was unable to stop after the landing on this difficult runway in the French Alps.  A snow wall finally brought the plane to a standstill.  Here is the video:

Airlines Crack Down on 'Hidden City' Travel

Hidden city ticketing is when a passenger purchases a ticket to a less popular and thus cheaper destination that happens to be routed through a more popular, and thus pricier hub destination, and gets off there, skipping the last leg of their journey - provided he or she travels only with hand luggage.
.
Airlines are cracking down on a ticketing loophole that can knock thousands of pounds, dollars or euros off the cost of travel – but the fight back is only giving more publicity to the advantages of “hidden city” travel.
.
It’s a dodge people have done for years but thanks to renewed publicity – and websites that take the leg work out of finding the best fares – airlines have called in their lawyers.

Aviation News: Airbus, GA Pilots, and Air Traffic Controllers

Final Build of the Airbus A380 in 2020
His final decision is a particularly bitter one: the end of the A380. At CEO Tom Enders' farewell press conference in Toulouse, of all places, the end of the showpiece plane is announced.

Once celebrated as a revolution in aviation, one of the most ambitious and also most expensive projects in the aviation industry comes to a comparatively quick end.
The Airbus A380 has given new impetus to passenger comfort like no other.
The press release is only one page long and seals the end of the mega-plane - and thus also of a project with which Airbus wanted to revolutionize aviation.
Airbus would have made losses for years due to the low production figures. In addition, Airbus had managed a positive surprise on its 2018 annual balance sheet, despite the special charge for the A380 shutdown: Net profit increased significantly.
Now it's over after only 12 years: Production of the Airbus A380 will be discontinued in two years at the latest.

Aviation Research Project
An Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researcher is seeking professional pilots to participate in a research project designed to evaluate the decision-making used by pilots.
The researchers hope that the survey’s findings could “lead to a potential increase to future aviation safety.”

GA pilots struggle to interpret weather forecasts and displays
When tested on their knowledge of 23 types of weather information, from icing forecasts and turbulence reports to radar, 204 general aviation pilots surveyed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researchers were stumped by about 42% of the questions.

The findings are worrisome because General Aviation pilots flying smaller planes at lower altitudes, usually with minimal ground-based support, have increased weather-related accident and fatality rates, said Elizabeth Blickensderfer, a professor in the university’s Department of Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology.

Air Traffic Controllers Alarmed
According to the air traffic controller union GdF, flight cancellations and delays will continue to make traveling difficult for passengers this summer.

At Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS), the situation will deteriorate once again compared to the already critical previous year. The planned detours for thousands of flights and relocations to other airspaces did not change anything.

Contrary to what had been announced at the national aviation summit last autumn, the number of training places for new pilots had not been increased so far. There were also no negotiations with the union as to how the current gaps could be closed.

Fun in the Air

Here are a few funny radio messages, captured from the vastness of the ether, from aviation forums and blogs: conversations between cockpit and tower:
.
Tower: "To avoid noise, please turn 45 degrees to the right." Pilot: "What can we do for noise at 35,000 feet?"
Tower: "The noise, when your Boeing727 collides with the 737 in front of you!"
.
Tower to a pilot who put down particularly hard: "A landing should not be a secret, passengers should know when they are down."
Pilot: "Never mind, they always clap anyway."
.
Pilot: "Have only little fuel and urgently request instruction." Tower: "What's your position? I do not have you on the radar !!!"
Pilot: "We are on lane 2 and now have been waiting for the refueling for ages."
.
Tower: "Height and position?"
Pilot: "I am 5ft, 10” tall and sit in the front left."
.
Tower: "Are you familiar with the approach procedure?"
Pilot: "Sure, what do you want to know?"

Happy Birthday - Boeing 747

Photo: Aldo Bidini 1978 - First: PanAm747

On Sept. 30, 1968, the first Boeing 747 rolled out of its assembly plant in Everett, WA. The new plane had its first test flight on Feb. 9, 1969, and debuted to a world audience at the Paris Air Show later that summer. From the beginning on, everything about the plane once known as the “Queen of the Skies” was big.
.
It was the first wide-body “jumbo jet” ever built, involving about 50,000 construction workers, mechanics, engineers and others who took it from an idea to the air in just sixteen! months.  Until 2007 and the introduction of the Airbus A380, it was the largest civilian airplane in the world.
.
In 1963, the U.S. Air Force issued a proposal for a very large transport aircraft to carry heavier loads and have a longer range than then-existing transport aircraft such as the C-141.  Although Boeing lost its bid for what is now known as the C5 Galaxy, the designs and studies that went into its proposal didn’t go to waste. That’s because, around the same time, Pan American World Airways wanted Boeing to build an airliner twice the size of the first-generation jet airliner, the 707.
.
Many in the aviation industry – including at Boeing – believed that the future of air travel belonged to the fast, not the large. They envisioned new fleets of supersonic aircraft – such as the Concorde, which began flying in 1976.  But Boeing plowed ahead with the project anyway.   By the end of the year, the Federal Aviation Administration declared it airworthy, and Pan Am took delivery of its first 747 on Jan. 15, 1970.  Since then, Boeing has built over 1,500 B747s, and about 500 are still flying today.
.
The Boeing 747 “starred” in two disaster movies – “Airport 1975” and “Airport ‘77,” not to mention several films that involved hijackings, including “Air Force One.”  The 747 also gained further fame from certain specialty missions. NASA, for example, used a specially modified 747 to transport the space shuttle between landing and launch sites.

But Boeing has no plans to assemble another 747 for the airlines. U.S. airlines stopped flying 747s in 2017, and what looks to be the last passenger B747-8 went to Korean Airlines that same year.  The aircraft, however, may still have a long life as a carrier of freight – UPS, for example, recently ordered 14 of them.

Flight to Australia With Her Open Biplane

Extreme air travel
A scheduled airline flight from the UK to Australia takes around 20 hours - the British pilot Tracey Curtis-Taylor has taken a little more time.  On October 1, 2015, she departed from Farnborough, England, flying in the "Spirit of Artemis", arriving in Sydney Australia on  January 9, 2016.

After three months alone in the air and in the open cockpit of a biplane from 1942, the adventurer, who grew up in Canada, had arrived in Australia.

It was a journey halfway around the world, a British pilot has landed in Sydney with her historic plane - after 21,000 kilometers. Her first words at the destination: "I need a drink."

In October, the 53-year-old took off from Farnborough near London.  About 21,000 kilometers and about 50 refueling stops later she landed her Boeing Stearman "Spirit of Artemis" in Sydney on Saturday.  "The end of a tremendous adventure," she wrote.

"I need a drink," she said after landing. "Flying was sensational - and that's why you do it," said Curtis-Taylor.  "Flying such an airplane at low altitude around half the world and seeing the most impressive landscapes - the geology, the vegetation - is the best view of the world, the best adventure in the world.  The journey took her through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Following the Footsteps of Other Female British Aviation Pioneers
Amy Johnson was the first woman to fly from Great Britain to Australia in 1930.  Curtis-Taylor had said before the start that such performances had impressed her all her life.
It took her 30 years to realize her dream of a solo trip to Australia.  By 2013 she had flown almost 13,000 kilometers from Cape Town in South Africa to England alone, as pilot Mary Heath had demonstrated in 1928.

Tracey Curtis-Taylor is a British aviator who has organized and piloted multiple flight expeditions with historic aircraft across Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and America.
