Lufthansa's Oldtimers Soon on Display

 



Lufthansa Places Two Vintage Aircraft on Permanent Display

Both aircraft will be given a new home to mark Lufthansa’s 100th anniversary and will be placed on permanent display in either Frankfurt or Munich.  Preparations will begin this year.


On January 6, 1926, Deutsche Luft Hansa AG was launched in Berlin through a merger of Deutscher Aero Lloyd and Junkers Luftverkehr. The first Lufthansa flight took off on April 6, 1926.  In 2026, Lufthansa will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding.



Junkers JU 52 - Also Called ’Tante JU’

The aircraft was built in 1936 at the Junkers factory in Dessau. Hugo Junkers was a German aircraft engineer and designer who pioneered the design of all-metal airplanes.  His company, Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG (Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works), was one of the mainstays of the German aircraft industry in the years between World War I and World War II.  

The story of Hugo Junkers - ingenious inventor, constructor, and entrepreneur  - is told in a beautifully restored old factory building in Dessau. Explanations are in German and English language. There are lots for the technical enthusiast to get excited about with all kinds of engines, drawings, photos, and the like.






Lockheed L-1694A Superstar  

The “Superstar” has been dismantled into individual parts, it had its maiden flight in 1956. The propeller-driven old-timers are among the most distinctive and historically significant aircraft in aviation history.  

The Lockheed Constellation (Super Conny) is one of the most iconic airliners ever built when the type first entered service in the early 1940s. It was the first four-engine propeller-driven aircraft, created at Lockheed in the 1940s at the suggestion of billionaire Howard Hughes.  Lufthansa operated their four Super Stars between 1958 and 1966, connecting what was then West Germany with New York City in the USA. The first passengers on board the premiere flight were treated to a level of comfort and service never before seen - and probably long after - even not in today’s first class. It contributed to the highly regarded reputation and legendary status of the Super Star.
