Good News: U.S. airlines will need to hire at least 7,000 new pilots next year to fill the gaps created by retiring baby boomers and pandemic buyouts. Delta Airlines will hire up to one thousand new pilots in the next few months. American Airlines says it will need 1,350 pilots by 2022 as it ramps up hiring demands. And Southwest Airlines will hire another 8,000 workers in 2022 on top of the 5,000 it’s hoping to hire before the holiday season.
The FAA requires commercial airline pilots to log 1,500 hours of flight time for certification on top of other training or 1,000 hours for prospective pilots who get a bachelor’s degree in an aviation field.
