YGK Airport in Kingston, ON, Canada

Kingston initially became the largest town in Upper Canada and was the capital of Canada from 1841 until December 1843.  Kingston is home to the Rideau Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site and is adjacent to the UNESCO Frontenac Arch Biosphere.  Nestled where the St. Lawrence River, Rideau Canal, and Lake Ontario meet, the city’s lakeshore location has earned it a reputation for some of the best freshwater sailing in the world.  It is also home to the world-renowned 1,000 Islands, the UNESCO-designated Rideau Canal, and Fort Henry.

Kingston offers dynamic festivals and events year-round.  Cinephile?  Experience the country’s best films at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival or explore issues of identity at the Reelout Queer Film Festival. Bookworm?  Connect with your favorite authors at Kingston WritersFest. Foodie?  Check out the Intercultural Arts Festival, YGK Craft Beer Fest, or Corks & Forks. Music lover? Limestone City Blues Festival and Back to the Farm Beer and Music Festival are must-dos, plus you can find live music wafting from Kingston’s many pubs, taverns, and cafes pretty much any night of the week.

Attractive Airport
Kingston Airport was established in 1940 in the throes of the Second World War.  Within a span of five months, Britain's Royal Air Force cleared 283 hectares (700 acres) and adapted the Nordair attendant's land to accommodate Canada's first air training school.

Air training began in December 1940, and attracted young pilots from all over the Commonwealth to Kingston.   The flight school transformed the Kingston skies through the war, as upwards of 100 planes would fly for 12-hour periods every day.  After dark, 20 planes would take to the air for night flight training.  At the end of war, the Department of Transport assumed ownership of the site and leased it to the City of Kingston.  The Kingston Flying Club moved its operations to the airport.

The airport struggled to remain profitable until the City of Kingston purchased it outright in 1974.  A much-needed update to the passenger terminal and runways was undertaken in 2018, and completed in 2019.  The City of Kingston acknowledges that they are on the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and the Huron-Wendat, and thanks these nations for their care and stewardship over this shared land.

The Airport's Name: Norman Rogers
Originally from Nova Scotia, Norman Rogers was a First World War veteran, Rhodes Scholar, and professor at Queen's University.  He became Minister of Labour upon his election as Member of Parliament for Kingston in 1935.  He was made Minister of Defence in 1939 and announced Kingston as the location for Canada's first air training school.  Minister Rogers died in a plane crash in 1940 while traveling to Toronto.  He was due to deliver a speech on behalf of then prime minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, regarding issues of rising xenophobia about German-born Canadians.

Kingston Airport is located approximately eight kilometers west of Kingston's historic downtown
Airport lands account for 275 hectares (679 acres).   Passenger traffic growth at Kingston Airport will be driven by regional economic and population growth, influenced by market and air services development
Passenger forecasts indicate passenger traffic growth of 2.8 percent, per annum.  By 2026, Kingston Airport is projected to handle 116,000 passengers per year. Aircraft movement forecasts project total aircraft movements to increase on average by 3.7 percent, per year.  By 2026, aircraft movements are expected to reach 53,000 operations.  In 2005, Kingston Airport generated employment for more than 150 people and contributed $39 million in annual revenue to the local economy.  These numbers have grown exponentially in the last 10 years.

Shuttle Flight Service
FLYGTA service is available to book online with dates serving weekdays and weekends.  YGK Airport first welcomed FLYGTA flights in 2020, as part of a short-term campaign to support the local tourism industry and safe regional travel during the pandemic.  FLYGTA has an excellent safety record and diligently adheres to all federal and provincial COVID-19 safety protocols.

Kingston Flying Club
Whether you are looking to start a career in aviation, or just want to start a new hobby, the Kingston Flying Club provides a professional yet relaxing environment and can work with you at your own pace.

Flight training is offered at the club from Recreational pilot permit, a private pilot license, night rating, multi-engine rating, and the instrument rating.  Flying above the 1,000 Islands during pilot training or on a sightseeing flight is one of the most attractive training areas in the country, and a pleasure for passengers.

Two restaurants invite visitors, passengers, and those who work at the airport to enjoy a meal, a coffee break or to celebrate their events at the airport.  During the warm season, patrons can watch the air traffic from the outdoors.

The Best Instructors New Pilots Can Get

The largest growing pool of experienced pilots is baby boomer retirees.  They have now the chance to continue serving well past their 65th birthdays by training the next generation of aviators.

Former Airline Captains that are now instructors are offering years of practical flight experience.  Not only are they exceptionally well-suited for the task of conducting relevant, world-class training.  It offers a welcome career extension to retirees who wish to dedicate their talents towards a renewed purpose.

By leveraging decades of real-world flying, retiring pilots bring focused expertise and a realistic view of what it takes to fly at the highest proficiency standards.  The best training can only be achieved by providing new pilots with instruction from those who possess the most relevant experience, the most qualified subject-matter expertise, and the greatest ability to impart unparalleled wisdom.

DPS is uniquely positioned, through its ownership by Delta Air Lines, to not only create a new path for retiring pilots looking to extend their careers into the future but also to reward them for their years of faithful service and personal sacrifice.

Boasting a list of instructional-services clients that include The Boeing Company, Delta Air Lines, FedEx, Hawaiian Airlines, and other valued carriers, DPS has established itself as the premier vendor in the supplemental flight instruction space.

Additionally, DPS offers one of the industry’s top ATP-CTP programs with an on-campus, major airline experience through the FAA Part 142 Delta Aircrew Training Center certificate.  To date, DPS has graduated more than 2,000 ATP-CTP students and currently offers courses in Atlanta and Miami.

Training with DPS is paid in an industry-leading manner against other providers, with cumulative incentive pay available for working late nights, weekends, holidays, special events, short calls, and exceeding 17 events in a calendar month.  Providing positive-space travel (for those who do not live locally), as well as full reimbursement for travel costs, makes DPS’ program extremely competitive for the commuting instructor, but these perks do not come in lieu of excellent base compensation.

In 2022, DPS was able to provide an 8% pay increase across the full-rate scale and removed incentive caps, creating an additional 18% in earning potential for the average instructor.  In 2023, another 5% pay-rate increase followed along with the commitment to provide instructors with every tool they need to be successful, both professionally and financially.

“The most important value DPS provides comes from giving retiring pilots a way forward that helps them to retain the positive self-identity and sense of purpose that they have come to rely on at a time when they could feel left behind as they depart their prestigious positions and their replacements join fleets around the world,” Captain Bob Skinner says, exemplifying the valuable insight that only a retired pilot can bring. “Being a pilot is something that is felt rather than said.  And DPS is committed to making sure that they feel right at home even when their time on the flight deck ends. Simply put, DPS is a great place to work.”

DPS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, Inc. and is headquartered at Delta Airlines' main campus in Atlanta, with additional training locations in Miami, Memphis, and Orlando.  Those seeking to work as instructors must have an Airline Transport Pilot certificate with Aircraft Multi-Engine Land class rating, and have served as a pilot at a 14 CFR Part 121 Certified Air Carrier with a minimum of 2,000 accrued hours as a Pilot in Command.

One can apply as early as six months prior to retirement but should apply no later than 36 months after retiring.  The company also lists “preferred but not required” qualifications including previous experience as a flight-simulator check airman or line-check pilot at a 14 CFR 121 Certified Air Carrier and Aircraft Type Rating in aircraft operated by Delta Air Lines or other DPS clients.

Scholarships and Grants for U.S. Flight Training Students

U.S. SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDERS

Take advantage and apply for aviation scholarships – offered by Women in Aviation to the EAA. Armstrong ab-initio Scholarship.

Or consider the National Business Aviation Association, the Aviation Distributors and Manufacturers Association, and several other organizations that offer scholarships for aviation students. The Experimental Aircraft Association  (EAA), for example, provides up to $10,000 to deserving youths to cover flight training expenses, through a fund, totaling $1,550,000 in scholarships annually. Chapters apply annually from November 1 to January 31 for these $10,000 scholarships.

Wings Airline Academy

There are even flight schools that offer scholarships - in the form of free CFI training: Wings Airline Academy, with campuses in the U.S. and the UK, is now offering more than $100,000 in scholarships to U.S. and UK-based students. Following successful selection and completion of Wing’s US/FAA Commercial Pilot’s License (CPL), each person selected for a 2023 Wings Scholarship will then be eligible to complete Wing’s Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) rating at no cost which normally costs $9,000. For U.S. students, Wings offers a range of financing options for your PPL and CPL, and then your Wings scholarship covers your CFI training.

Aviation Scholarships in North Dakota

High School Juniors, Seniors, or Recent GED recipients from North Dakota, USA, can receive scholarships for their training as a professional pilot, aviation maintenance, aviation engineering, unmanned aircraft systems, airport management, atmospheric sciences, air traffic control, or other aviation-related fields.

NBAA Scholarships

The National Business Aviation Association launched a new scholarship to support students interested in a career in business aviation who are currently enrolled in programs to achieve this goal. Two $1,500 scholarships will be given out annually.

Overall, the NBAA Charities scholarship program, generously supported by NBAA member donors, offers nearly $100,000 annually in cash awards as tuition reimbursement for enrolled students and nearly the same amount in monetary and training awards for working professionals in business aviation. This includes pilots, maintenance professionals, schedulers, dispatchers, flight attendants, and flight technicians.

Piedmont Airlines

The subsidiary of American Airlines is proud to offer prospective pilots selected for the cadet program a $30,000 bonus and a guaranteed career path to the world’s largest airline. For most pilots coming out of flight school, building flight time is long and expensive. Piedmont is offering these incentives to help alleviate that burden. And unlike traditional cadet programs, Piedmont’s cadets can earn hours when they want, where they want.

Pilots with 500 hours of flight time and a commercial license with multi-engine and instrument ratings or pilots who hold a CFI certificate can apply to Piedmont’s cadet program with no additional flighttime requirement. Once accepted into the program, pilots will receive a $7,500 signing bonus. In addition, they will earn money for every 100 hours of logged flight time, up to $12,500. Pilots will also earn $5,000 upon entry as first officer and an additional $5,000 at year one. On top of that, pilots who join the cadet program can earn an additional $10,000 for every future pilot they successfully refer to Piedmont.

Airline Pilots Association Scholarships

Children of medically retired, long-term disabled, or deceased pilot members of the Air Line Pilots Association are eligible for the Air Line Pilots Association scholarship program. The total monetary value is $12,000, with $3,000 disbursed annually to the recipient for four consecutive years provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

Global Air Scholarships

Applications are now open for the GlobalAir.com Calvin L. Carrithers Aviation Scholarship, which will provide four students $1,000 each towards their aviation training in a collegiate aviation program in the United States during the 2023-2024 school year.

Applications must include a short essay that details the applicant’s interest in aviation, future career path, and how they intend to complete their aviation program.

Applicants also have the option to include a letter of recommendation.

MBTA Educational Foundation Scholarships

Amount: $2,000. The MBTA has a separate 501(c) 3 charitable foundation that awards scholarships through the MBTA Educational Foundation. Most of the money raised for the scholarships comes from the foundation’s annual Super Raffle. Preference may be given to students attending Maine universities or colleges.
