Changes to Flight Software on 737 Max Escaped F.A.A. Scrutiny
Capt. Sullenberger explains in this article: https://nyti.ms/2VDWGMv

.
Hot and High
Before last month's crash of a flight that began in Ethiopia, Boeing admitted in a legal document that large, upgraded 737s "cannot be used at what are referred to as 'high/hot' airports."
The Ethiopian airport's altitude hasn't been cited as a factor in the downing of Flight 302 and likely didn't cause the crash. But it could have exacerbated the situation because an airplane's performance degrades at higher altitudes. Data released last week from the Ethiopian Airlines flight indicated the pilots didn't cut the 737 Max 8 airplane's speed after takeoff when they should have.
At an elevation of 7,657 feet - or more than a mile high - Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport falls into that category. High elevations require longer runways and faster speeds for takeoff.

Boeing’s Dreamliner jet is facing claims of manufacturing issues
The New York Times reported on Saturday that the newspaper’s investigation of a Boeing plant “reveals a culture that often valued production speed over quality.”
The Times said it reviewed “hundreds of pages of internal emails, corporate documents, and federal records.”
Boeing workers have filed numerous safety complaints with the federal government over issues ranging from shoddy manufacturing practices to tools and debris being left on planes, The New York Times reports.

Lufthansa: Large Airplane Orders
Lufthansa ordered 20 Boeing 787-9 and 20 additional Airbus A350-900 long-haul planes to replace its older four-engine aircraft as it seeks to boost the fuel efficiency of its fleet.
The German company said it has also agreed to sell six of its 14 Airbus A380 planes back to Airbus in 2022/2023 for economic reasons.
Lufthansa currently operates a long-haul fleet of 199 aircraft. It said the new, more economical aircraft will lower its operating cost compared to earlier models by around 20 percent.

Review of the AERO in Friedrichshafen, Germany
The 27th AERO recorded an exhibitor plus of seven percent.
With 757 companies from 40 countries, the International Aviation Fair on Lake Constance was bigger than ever before, and foreign participation was correspondingly high: every second exhibitor came from abroad. And the number of visitors, at 32,100, was also extremely pleasing.

Blue Angels in Pensacola, FL

What’s can be more fun than to hang out at the lovely Gulf Beaches around Pensacola and watch the Blue Angels' training for their next air show? Admire the unbelievable precision flights at the Sun ’n Fun air show - or any other air show in the country!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4e0GMwy2s4

The next best thing would be a visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum, the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum and one of the most-visited museums in the State of Florida.  Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  More than 150 beautifully restored aircraft are representing the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation.

Best of all: Admission is free!
The entrance to the base is at the West Gate off Blue Angel Parkway
halfway to Perdido Beach (1878 S Blue Angel Pkwy)

Forms of identification acceptable to get on base: Driver’s License, Passport, Voter Registration, School ID, Native AmericanTribal Document, Federal, State or locally issued ID Card. An international passport is required for non-U.S. Citizen visitors to access the Naval Air Station Pensacola. After all, visitors are entering a military base!

Movie Times in the Museum:
9:30 a.m. Journey to Space
10:00 a.m. Magic of Flight
11:00 a.m. Aircraft Carrier
12:00 p.m. Magic of Flight
1:00 p.m. Aircraft Carrier
2:00 p.m. D-Day:  1944
3:00 p.m. Magic of Flight
4:00 p.m. Aircraft Carrier

National Naval Aviation Museum visitors can now even take a virtual walk on the moon through the museum's new attraction: The Apollo 11 VR Experience.

One day at the museum is just too few to admire all the wonderful artifacts and the skillful arranged vintage decorations which creates the mood for the times in which the airplanes have been flown.  Very moving also to watch Navy veterans who are visiting the museum, some are in their nineties.

Light Tower Museum at the Naval Air Base

Just a minute from the Naval Air Museum is the tiny Pensacola Lighthouse Museum.  Do your daily workout and climb up 177 steps to the top of the light tower.  During the week you might be even able to be at flight level with the Blue Angel squadron.

Have a picknick in the lovely grounds around the light tower and walk or jog the foresty surroundings and admire the many native plants - year round - such as these berries in late December.

Aviation News April 6

SUN 'n FUN Fly- in and Expo - until Sunday, April 7
In its 45th year, Sun’n Fun in Lakeland, FL, has cemented its place behind EAA AirVenture Oshkosh as the second-biggest air show of the year. Highlights of this year’s Sun ‘n Fun are appearances by the Blue Angles – always a crowd favorite – beginning on Sunday, April 7.  See a video from their precision flights:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4e0GMwy2s4&t=31s

The history of the Blue Angels dates to 1946, when Admiral Chester Nimitz, chief of naval operations, had the idea of creating a flight demonstration team that would raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and boost Navy morale.

Boeing Admits ANOTHER Glitch in 737 MAX Software
‘Minor’ Critical Problem?  My comment: Remember the Lion Air crash?
"Pilots do not receive an alert when the MCAS system activates", said Capt. Dennis Tajer, spokesman for the Allied Pilots Assn., which represents American Airlines pilots. "And their new engines now sit ahead of the aircraft’s center of gravity and that creates more lift for the plane, which could pitch the aircraft up."
At that time, a Boeing official told the Wall Street Journal (on Nov. 15) that the company decided not to give flight crews more details about the MCAS system so it would not overload pilots with too much information and technical data.
Tajer of the Allied Pilots Assn. said flight manuals for the 737 MAX aircraft did NOT have an explanation of the MCAS system. A union representing Southwest pilots told Bloomberg their manuals also did NOT include a description of the system...
After two crashes and flight bans, US aviation giant Boeing reduces production of its 737 MAX series. The monthly production rate will be reduced by almost one fifth from 52 to 42 aircraft as of mid-April.

Turkish Airlines is Switching to a New Istanbul Airport
In Erdoğan’s latest high-stakes megaproject, 10,000 pieces of equipment will be relocated in a single weekend – all in 45 hours.  Planners are calling this weekend move “the Big Bang”: a total of 10,000 pieces of equipment, from planes to huge aircraft-towing vehicles to fragile security sensors, will be moved from Atatürk to the new airport’s location, 30km north on the Black Sea.  Sunday, all Turkish Airlines flights will be expected to arrive and depart from the new site.

Business Aviation Pilot Demand Steady
For business aviation, the number of needed pilots is expected to increase by four percent, not only due to the delivery of new aircraft but also to a reduction in the number of previously owned aircraft that were once sitting around idle. The report looked at both pilots that will be hired to fill the shoes of retiring aviators and those hired to handle industry growth.
