Old Rhinebeck, NY, Historic Airshows Are Back

 


Airshows, an Aviation Museum, and Biplane Flights - everything an aviation enthusiast likes is no back to the Old Rhinebeck, in the Hudson Valley of New York State, approx. 60 miles north of New York City. Old Rhinebeck is in the middle of the historic Hudson Valley, halfway between New York City and Albany’s Capital District, and a scenic drive from North New Jersey and Western New England


The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a true "living" museum of antique aviation and features airplanes, automobiles, motorcycles, early engines & memorabilia from the 1900-to the 1935s.  The stars are the historic airplanes including our 1909 Bleriot, the oldest regularly flying airplane in the Western Hemisphere; the Fokker DR-I Triplane, the most famous fighter of WWI, and a precise replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, which was the first aircraft to fly NY to Paris in 1927. 


The 2022 Air Shows are every Saturday and Sunday from June 18 to October 16.  Pre-Show Activity at 2:00 PM.  Open Cockpit Biplane Rides are available before and after the Air Shows, starting at 10 AM and running to twilight. 


The Saturday “History of Flight” program highlights the Pioneer era before WWI, a WWI Show teaser, and the Golden Age of Aviation in the ’20s and ’30s.  The Sunday Show is a WWI dog fight spectacular with a hero, a heroine, the villainous Black Baron of Rhinebeck scenery, the supporting cast includes many antique automobiles.


1929 Open Cockpit Biplane Rides fly weekdays 10 AM to 5 PM, by reservation and first come-first served. Air Show weekend rides,  June 18-Oct 16,  are first-come-first-served, 10:30 AM-2:15 PM and 4:00 PM to dusk.  A two-passenger minimum is required.  Flights are approximately 15 minutes long, and admission is $100 per person.

The Last Learjet ...

 


Mark Phelps wrote a great article:

"Last Learjet Rolls Off Bombardier’s Wichita Assembly Line".  Phelps describes the sale of the first one: On June 4, 1964, Bill Lear laughingly told his executive staff gathered around a conference table in Wichita, Kansas, “OK, we’ve just sold our first Lear Jet!”  But the “customer” was the insurance company.

As related in Richard Baske’s biography of Bill Lear, “Stormy Genius,” an FAA test pilot had neglected to retract the wing spoilers before a certification test flight, and the prototype Lear Jet 23 crashed into a field off the end of the runway.  It burned to ashes, but not before the FAA pilot and company test pilot escaped uninjured.  The insurance money enabled the struggling company to eke out the seven weeks needed to achieve certification on July 31, 1964, and Lear Jet #2 was delivered to its—real-world—cash customer shortly thereafter.

Now the last of more than 3,000 iconic Lear Jets rolled out...
